Engagement with people with lived experience of domestic and family violence

Victim survivors hold critical knowledge about domestic and family violence, and the response service systems. Victim survivors who have used specialist domestic and family violence services have unique insights into the experience and effectiveness of such services, including the factors that support clients to feel believed, secure safety, and heal and recover from harm. These insights are an important part of the story of domestic and family violence service provision, and are essential for mapping its future.

The Safety Measures program will engage with people with lived experience of domestic and family violence in a number of key ways, including through consultation, interviews and focus groups throughout the life of the program. This engagement will be guided by the program’s Lived Experience Advisory Group, which will include people from across Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria.

The Safety Measures program recognises the diversity of people with lived experience of domestic and family violence. We honour the strengths and knowledge of victim survivors and understand that violence is only one part of their lives.
